Producers strategies

Having sites on the Internet like YouTube and myspace it is so much easier for people to produce their own music and put it on the Internet. Artists don't necessarily need major labels anymore as they can just upload their music on the Internet.

Many artist have found fame after gaining a huge amount of followers on myspace after uploading their own music, without any help from a major record label. A good example of this is Lily Allen who's career started in myspace. Anyone can upload music onto the Internet like Justin Beiber who posted videos of him singing on YouTube and it landed him a record deal.

On shows such as Top of the pops music videos started to replace the artist when they couldn't perform live as there were on tour or unavailable.

Extension of income/power

As artist make more money with their music they gain more star power. Different artists use this power for different reasons. For example you have artists like 50 cent who earn a huge amount of money and put it on show for everyone to see. In his videos and promo pictures you will see 5o cent covered in expensive jewellery with expensive cars and houses. 50 cent has economic power as he has lots of money, this adds to his star power.

Also as a artist makes more money or is selling a good amount off records they gain artistic power. A good example off this would be Lady Gaga who has creative control of her own image and how she is appears in the media. Not all artists gain this kind of power over their own career, where they are not controlled by their music company.

There is also ideological power which is when the artist has a influence over the audience. It can be in form of fashion. Lady gaga dose this very well as she has people talking about and copying her style. Or the artist can have an influence over their fans opinions like Bono the lead singer of U2, who's political views are heard by his fans and can even influence their opinion on a matter.

An extension of income could come from YouTube and music channels as it increases the amount of records a artist will sell. As the more people see and hear your music the more records you will sell. many artist have their own YouTube account to upload new music videos. more and more artists use the Internet to sell more records. On YouTube you can also have adverts up for a artists music with a link attached so its easy to download their music.

Promotion

All music artists want to promote themselves, and a way of doing this is by releaseing a music video. Each artist has a image that they have constucted through music videos, live performances, newspaper publicity, album art, public events ect. A artists image forms a product to sell to the public. Having a music video online or on music channels promotes the artist and their music. The more people who hear and see your music videos the more records you will sell. Artists have realised this and now put lots of money into music videos. Another word for a artists image is star vehicle, this bascially means that artists use their music videos as a vecicle to change their image. As many artists like Madonna change their image every album, having a music video is a way of showing the public what their new image is. They also use public appearences and magazine front covers to show the pulic their new image.

Extension of outlets

In the 1920's and 30's there was the introduction of "The soundies". This was where they would show a video of artists performing their music on a small screen. Soundies would be in areas for young people like cafes and food bars. This was the first time that the public could see the music artists playing their music, be for this people couldn't put a face to the music as music was only heard on the radio.

In the 1960's artists started doing short experimental films with their music involved they were seen as art films. In the 60's music videos were not important in promoting the band or selling records. But experimental films became very popular.

In the 70's "Top of the pops" started in Britain, all the artists played live. However when the artists couldn't be in the studio to perform they would play their music video as a substitute. So this meant that music videos were becoming a big deal, there was finally a purpose for music videos. Music videos were still experimental and were still linked to the art scene.

In the 1980's MTV started in America, it was the first time people could turn on their TVs and watch music videos. You could also tune in at different times for different music genres. Artist's realised that there was gap in the market for music videos, as playing your music videos on MTV would boost your sales as more people have the chance of seeing and hearing your music. Also in the 80's artists started doing music videos for every single they released, this was the first time this happened and it meant that they would sell more records as music videos would promote their music.

The 90's was a golden era for music videos, music companies would set aside alot of money to make music videos or to hire top music video directors. Other TV companies started to make spin off music channels like Smash hits and Q to cater to other music genres and not just the top 40 singles.

In the 00's Internet sites like YouTube and My space became big and these sites meant that you watch music videos online, this is good for the artist as it pro mote's there music for free. In the 00's artists had more control of there music and videos because they could appeal to a wide audience on the Internet for free, this meant that artist didn't have to follow the big music companies.
